A brief history of Latin Literature’s criticism

Breve história da crítica da Literatura Latina

Paulo Martins – USP

This paper presents an overview of Ancient Latin Poetry’s criticism. It begins with the biographical readings of the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth centuries and proceeds to discuss the radical change in interpretation that followed, starting with Allen (1950) who, based on the poetic architecture that permeates such poems, viewed them as absolute fictional constructions. However, after the radicalism of the anti-biographical criticism, a third possibility is now being studied: if the poet gives his own name or uses the names of historically identifiable characters, this must be considered as an extra element to the poetic iocus – he, the poet, is intentionally blurring the boundaries between res ficta and historical truth. Thus, the last part of the paper will discuss the implications of this new outlook on the poetic and historiographic genres.
